Getting into a new work mindset can be a journey. Transitioning from a structured 9-5 job to entrepreneurship felt different, not necessarily bad, but definitely different.
The Agency:
The shift from a 9-5 work mentality into a new schedule was the first thing that had to happen. I had been so accustomed to the traditional work model that embracing the freedom and responsibility of being an entrepreneur required a mental shift. Initially, I found myself losing track of weekends as work picked up. I was putting in hours around the clock, often at odd times, while my fiancé followed a typical 9-5 routine and our daughter went to school. Some days blurred together; Tuesday felt like Friday, and Saturday felt like Monday. It was one of the first signs that a mental shift was happening.
Traditional jobs teach us to stay busy throughout the workday, but I've learned that's not always conducive to great work. Having produced music and created videos professionally for over 20 years, I realized that the magic often happens in moments. It's about capturing those moments and then refining them, which is the essence of the art and marketing business. I had to reprogram myself to feel it was "ok" to work in chunks of time rather than the structured 8-hour workdays, 5 days a week.
The Golf:
Golf use to be a hobby/leisure activity for me until I started my golf business. Suddenly, being on the course on a weekday, creating content for Instagram and social media, became part of my work. Initially, I struggled with feeling like I was playing "hookey" instead of working and it got worse when I went full on with entrepreneurship. If my hole vlogging didn't yield what I deemed "good" content, I'd feel like the round was a waste. However, over time, I learned to see the value in every shot, good or bad. That was the lightbulb moment. Realizing that everyone experiences bad shots made the content more relatable and engaging and I started to diversify the content into various categories.
This shift in mindset became the foundation of my golf journey and business. It gave me confirmation that the time was well spent, as my Instagram began to grow from it.
The Result:
One day, it all clicked. I realized I had embraced the fact that this is now my job. What I've been doing for the past year has become my new schedule. I no longer was feeling guilty for not sitting in front of a computer all day doing menial tasks. Every action I take is now directed towards my business goals. It's about taking purposeful action and staying busy toward achieving my goals. Embracing this new schedule and mindset has been transformative, allowing me to focus on what truly matters for my business and work life balance.
Listen, I haven't got it all figured out. Nobody truly does, but what I can share is that everything is starting to fall into place as my "new normal" for the next decade. My weekends are starting to feel like weekends again and I feel less guilty about the choices I make during the work week. If there's one thing to take from this, it's to remind yourself that it's okay to do it this way. You're forging your own path. In the words of Shang Tsung, “It has begun!”
